Countdown to Wedding! (250 days)

Pat says

It's 31 Dec 2012! and 250 days (about 8 months) to our big day.

To date, we have secured the following:

1) Solemnisation place - The White Rabbit
2) Banquet dinner - Four Seasons Hotel
3) Pre-wedding photography - My Dream Wedding
4) Actual day photography - One Eye Click
5) Actual day videography - Cream Pictures
6) Actual day car rental for bride & groom - My Wedding Car

Tips: it might seems like its super early to book such stuff, however we already have our fair share of disappointment when the ones we want have alr been booked! so to avoid disappointments, its always gd to book early! =)

1st Session with Bridal Studio

Key says

Today is our first session with our bridal studio and in this session, we are suppose to choose (i) the gowns and suits for the photoshoot, (ii) select the location of the photoshoot, (iii) confirmation of the package bought and (iv) pay the balance of the package bought.

Frankly speaking, I was quite looking forward to it a few days earlier and wasn't quite sure what is expected of us on today. However, I would have to say the experience with the bridal studio has been very pleasant. As much as we were told that typically this session will take about 3 hours, we spent close to 4.5 hours in the studio - going through sample photos to choose our location, negotiating some changes to the package, choosing of gown and suits and trying out the gowns and suits. Despite the multiple requests and questions from us, the staffs have been very friendly and helpful throughout. So far I am quite pleased with the service standard that they showed - from the time we purchase the package and this first consultation session - and hopefully we can expect the same or better standards of service for the photoshoots, choosing of photographs and actual day.

Our first consultation session with My Dream Wedding! We bought their package from them earlier this year and they have been consistently calling us to book a first appt! >.< abit irritating, but without the constant calls, we wouldn't really remember to reserve early anyway i guess. hehe.. thanks to their hardwork!

First time at a bridal studio, abit scared and worried. Cause I didnt have prior experience before so I really dunno what to expect! >.<

1) A guy, Alex came to entertain us first, we went through our initial package to make sure that nothing was wrong and he mentioned they will type it nicely for us again.

2)  Finally our consultant, Xiao Ai came! Luv her warm and pretty smile. We had to chose gowns and three photoshoot places. Because we didnt really talked about it, it was really tough to come up with three places suddenly. Nevertheless, they had alot photoshoot books for us to browse through. Which was very helpful indeed! In the end, we picked three places which I think are very good choices! (more to be revealed after the photoshoot! )

3) Time to chose the guys attire for the photoshoot day. She came out with abt 10 diff kinds of tuxedo/blazer, ranging with black, cream and grey colour. We asked if they had other colors like blue etc, but apparently their color collection was quite limited. That was a boo to us. Nevertheless, we managed to pick a black and cream attire after much much discussion! No penguin design for key~ looks weird on him! or thats what i feel. hahaha

4) Next for the gowns. Earlier on, i walked though the whole shop and was quite disappointed with the range that I saw, seems little. But Xiao Ai mentioned that they had a store room with plenty of other choices, but I had to tell her what I kinda want so she can get some designs for me. Thanks to her help, I tried like 10-20 over gowns? with different lengths and color. super tiring!! but I finally managed to find two white ones for the photoshoot. (all thanks to the phootshoot books for reference!)

Tips on consultation session for photoshoot:

a) Good to research on the places you plan to take photos in. Afterwhich it will be easier to chose the attires for the photoshoots as it has to kinda match the places for the photoshoot.

b) Good to research on the type of gowns you wanna wear for the photoshoot. But it is still fun to try diff kinds of gowns and colors! Especially if you didnt had any idea like me! hehe..

c) Prepare for alot of time! Our consultation session was a very impt one! once we chose the gowns and the places we had to stick to it. Changing of gowns would cost $$$. So try not to plan anything after the session, and dont be paiseh if cannot find a gown u want. The more you talk to your consultant abt the type of dresses you like, the better her choice of gowns for you will be. (since she understands you more~)

Shoutout to all ladies~ I always didnt thought much about gowns, and thought I would prefer simple ones. But after trying so many gowns, it kinda feel nice to be a princess ones~ hehehe.. =)

Breakeven? Guess not.

Key says

Now that I am preparing for our own wedding, I realized how much time, effort and money is needed for this joyous occasion. In case anyone is thinking that I am going to whine and complain over here, that is not the case.

It's just that now that I am actually preparing for my wedding, I realized that in the past, even though I tried to ensure my angbao (red packet) for the banquet meets the breakeven price of the table (inclusive of GST and service charges) for the wedding dinners that I had attended, the couple does not actually breakeven for the whole event, considering a wedding is not just a banquet but consisting of other matters as well, e.g. bridal photo, car rental, actual day photo and video, decorations, and many other things that the couple might pay to make this special day special. All these are costs that are invisible to the guests (or people like me who has not been through a wedding) that are invited for the dinner.

Now once again, I am not complaining. This is because I believe a lot of couples, like ourselves does not mind spending some money to make this day special, since it is supposed to be an once-in-a-life-time thing and money can never measure up to the true value and joy of celebrating the fruits of a couple's love, their commitment to each other and the blessing of others. However this does not change the fact that holding a (typical) wedding in Singapore is not cheap (something I always know), not too mention for couples who takes the effort to customize their wedding to make it different and special.

That's why it suddenly occurred to me whether should I give a bit more than the breakeven price of the banquet, so that it can help to relieve a bit of the financial burden of the newly weds? Also I think I will be even more disgusted by stories of how people who pay for one person but bring the whole family down (sometimes even extended family) or where they put newspaper in the red packet (true story that happened to my friend).

Just some random thoughts of a guy preparing for his special day.

The More Tedious Path

Key says

After much considerations and consulting with financial planners/friends/seniors, we have decided to take matters in our own hands and take the more tedious path to plan for our own wedding...

We have a wedding planner in mind and if possible I would choose to engage them so that the wedding can be transformed and carried out to my expectations but financially we will be pretty constrained.

Now that we have made up our mind, I hope I can still plan an extraordinary (not the usual singapore style) wedding by ourselves. It may be tiring; frustrating and full of difficulties but I hope it will also strengthen our bond and bring us unforgettable memories.

For now I can only hope and keep my fingers crossed that it will be a memorable wedding just as how I hope it will be.

Pat says

Planning and organizing the wedding may be an up-hill task, but with the experience I gain, I might be able to be a wedding planner~! *beams*

On a positive note, it also means we will have more budget for house decorations and honey moon.

Venues Confirmed!

As at now the solemnization venue is confirmed! The wedding is set to go and soon we will be busy with things like the decorations, wedding favors, photoshoot, guest list and many many more activities!

Date is Set!

We have finalized on the banquet venue and though our first choice for the date was not available, but the date that we be having the banquet is still a very meaningful date (which Pat finally agrees to). In the meantime, we still need to source for a solemnization location and also do look out for the "Save The Date" updates!

Key says

We heard many things about the glass pavilion of Amara Sanctuary and thought it would be nice to have the solemnization over there. However I guess we can say we have our hopes too high as the disappointment was really great when we saw the actual venue. The grass area is poorly maintained and the surrounding was not as beautiful as what we expect it to be. In fact, even the "waterfall" is just a mini-sized "waterfall"!

However, the ballroom and pre-function area was huge and exclusive. Sadly, not alot of customization can be done to the ballroom and even though one side of the ballroom is windowed, the view outside is not fantastic as there are grills and it is facing the traffic. A place with great potential to be an ideal venue but it does not match up to our expectations.

Pat says

After searching online on reviews on Amara, most of the people raved about their glass pavilion. Coupled with the beautiful pictures found on the glass pavilion, I was quite impressed on it and it was considered as my ideal place for solemnization.

We made an impromptu trip down to Amara and I found the area to be very pleasant looking and suitable for a weekend getaway. However I was apparently disappointed with what we found. Basically I felt that the environment surrounding the glass pavilion was not maintained properly. I saw bare grass patched and it was not actually very gardenish.

We did not managed to talk to the wedding coordinator, however because luckily for us there was a wedding to be held on that day so we could find a semi decorated glass pavilion and banquet area. I was quite impressed with the banquet area, high ceiling and super big space. There is a minimum requirement of 35 tables and I quite like the table decoration. Sadly, the ballroom is enclosed and the only wall that has windows had an unpleasant view of the road hence it is not possible to open the curtains. Could be an option if we didn't have other better choices.

Four Seasons Hotel

Pat says

Was searching online for banquet with windows and tadah~ out comes Four Seasons Hotel. Further reviewing of the awesome pictures found on their website made me certain that Four Seasons Hotel can be a candidate as one of our choices for our wedding dinner. Again, we are not into hotel ballrooms but this is not your usual ballroom where it is enclosed. Hence although Key was a bit reluctant to go and visit Four Seasons Hotel because he did comment that pictures could be deceiving, I insisted that we make a trip there.

Key arranged a meeting session with the hotel's wedding coordinator on a weekday night. As I stepped into the hotel, I was impressed with the reception waiting area and their dining and cafe area. The decorations and furnitures made it look very european style. We had a discussion with the wedding coordinator and since we already met with quite a couple of wedding coordinator, this was by far the best that we have seen with much confidence and assurance that the wedding will go well.

Next we went to visit the banquet halls. They had two halls, one that can accommodate 15 tables and another 35 tables. I didn't really like the smaller banquet hall because it was not the one that I was looking for, aka there were no windows and it did looked quite cramped. The bigger banquet hall was not bad. With windows at one side of the hall and mirrors on the other. It looked very cozy and the mirrors were european styled which also gave it a magnifying look. However I did not really like the chandeliers on top. Sadly, it was apparently true what Key said, the photos did look much nicer then in real life. And I think that the windows would look better if it was an afternoon event because night time you really can't see much outside. Nevertheless, it is an acceptable ballroom thanks to the european styled windows and doors. Also, we felt very positive with the hotel's wedding coordinator and hence it would be one of the choices we would be considering.

Key says

Pat wanted to take a look at the ballroom of Four Seasons Hotel and so I made an arrangement with the coordinator. As what Pat had mentioned, hotel ballrooms isn't really what we are into as it's restrictive, enclosed and a bit too rigid. Open-air garden wedding or layback chill out wedding was what we have in mind actually. As expected, the ballroom is as usual, though the chandeliers of the smaller ballroom is nicer than the bigger ballroom.

As we went through with the coordinator, we realized that even though it's a ballroom, Four Seasons allow certain flexibility in customizing the ballroom to fit into certain themes (though it definitely comes with a price). The pre-function menu is fantastic and I am very impressed with the confidence that comes from the coordinator. Never have I been so won over just by a conversation with someone! It really gives me the impression that things will go smoothly if we were to hold our banquet there and hence Four Seasons Hotel is definitely in my list of choices.

Swissotel The Stamford

We were actually interested in Equinox or New Asia Bar, but we chance upon the wedding package for Swissotel The Stamford too. A few things that I caught my attention was their peking duck carving station, a pastry chef's specialty (warm melted chocolate fountain with fruits and marshmallows), and their upgrading of Chinese desserts to buffet dessert. I never really look at hotel's wedding packages because we weren't very interested in having a tradition wedding. But because Swissotel had these amazing optional packages, I decided that we could take a look at their ballroom (just to give them a chance).

I guess I didn't really expect much of their ballroom, because I thought that it would be the same old same old. When we reached there, I was shocked to find 4 weddings held on a saturday night. It's either that the date was super awesome or there must be something else about Swissotel. Swissotel has several ballrooms that will cater to your different needs. I particularly like Stamford Ballroom because it has a private reception area, however it caters to a minimum of 45 tables (weekend), 40 tables (weekday). Key did comment about the huge minimum required tables and the manager commented that we could have the place if we meet their minimum spending. I didn't find the ballroom very fantastic, in fact I would prefer Amara or Capella instead. Solemnization would be held in smaller rooms, I especially like the one that had the view of MBS and Esplanade. I was quite amazed that the view from the rooms were quite awesome, since I didn't really wanted a solemnization in a room. Sadly, the view of the solemnization room of Stamford Ballroom didn't had such a fantastic view. But I guess you could chose which room you want to be solemnized in. 

Key says:

The customization of the menu is fantastic and I know Pat will love it, hence we decided to take a look at their ballroom. I was just as surprised as Pat when we find that the view of solemnization room is pretty good. As for the other ballrooms, I only prefer the Stamford Ballrom in view of the privacy but as what Pat has highlighted, there is a minimum spending needed. Of course it is still just a ballroom and so compared to other unique venues that we are looking at, this pales slightly in comparison.

1-Altitude

Key says:

Waste of time. Even though it's high, the view is not fantastic. Pointed out by Pat, the maintenance of the greens were very lousy and the area that can be used for solemnization does not gave you the bird's eye view of Singapore, making it useless to hold a solemnization at one of the tallest building in Singapore.

Pat says:

Although 1-Altitude is on the 61st floor, however the view is incomparable with Ion Sky Gallery. The roof top was disappointing as I can see that the plants and lawns have not been very well maintained. Perhaps since it is an open air concept, the place looks quite old with wear and tear. Also, there isn't very much plants, so it does not really give you so the photos taken might not come out to have a nature feeling. Restaurant wise, I would say that it is quite decent with no pillars in the centre and the space does look spacious. However there are weird ceiling decorations, which I dont think is removable. There is also a private room available, which perhaps can hold miscellaneous stuff for the wedding. I would say  after visiting Ion Sky Gallery and The Jewel Box, this pales in comparison.

Marina @ Keppel Bay

Key says:

There was a wedding held at Marina @ Keppel Bay before (google-ed) and it looks fabulous. Thinking we might be able to do the same, we went to check it out and only to realize that wedding cannot be held there! After clarification, it seems that was the one and only wedding ever being held there! As much as it's a beautiful location, we would not be able to have it as our venue.

Pat says:

"Outdoor Wedding Specialist" mentioned that they were in-charged of decorating a wedding at Prive (Marina @ Keppel Bay). The photos provided were amazing, and it was a dream wedding under the stars, which fit our "dream" wedding. We visited the location and even ate at Prive to taste test the food. I find the egg benedict to be not bad, and with a spectacular view of the sea and the Yacht port, it would deem as a good place to hold the wedding.

To our utmost dismay, we were notified by the staff at Marina @ Keppel Bay that it was not possible to do a wedding in the vicinity! We could do an event, but no wedding gowns are allowed! We checked with OWS and they notified us that it was a one off event held many years back. They did kindly introduced Emily Hill and Fort Canning as other alternatives. 

I personally felt quite cheated and heart broken. Perhaps they should at least update their blog and state that weddings at Marina @ Keppel Bay are not allowed any more. But well, Emily Hill looks nice in the pictures that OWS has provided me so I might consider looking at that venue too.

Ion Sky Gallery

"So much awaits you. Come up to the sky, even if it is just to watch the clouds go by."

Key says:

One of the unique venue which I would like to hold the wedding would be the Ion Sky Gallery. Superb view and privacy, it is the ideal location. The only problem is that it can only hold less than 200 people which means not everyone on our invitation list can be invited

Pat says:

When I first step into Ion Sky Gallery, the feeling was amazing. I did not know that Ion Sky Gallery provided such awesome scenery of Singapore. One of the staff mentioned that you could see the whole land are of Singapore! A ticket up provide a small made-shift binocular for your viewing pleasure. There are also small binocular type of machines situated sparsely around the viewing gallery, where you can view live and static images Singapore's landscape. It is a must-go place in Singapore!


To consider it as a wedding venue, I would say it's good for a small guest list of 100. This is because there are pillars around the area and slopes that blocks out quite a no. of space. I don't really think the ideal place for solemnize picture is that fantastic. Since its a viewing gallery, I would expect that I need to spend alot more on decorations as the place appears quite bare.


I actually would consider Salt Grill & Sky Bar for a party of 120, a restaurant found beside the Ion Sky Gallery. There is already a very nice Italian atmosphere and I love the restaurant setting and decorations.  Plus you get similar view as the Ion Sky Gallery, just that its of another part of Singapore. There is also a small bar area where guest can chill and relax! A pity that they can only hold 120 guests.

Key says:

First impression when I saw Capella is that it is awesome (first thought to myself at the same time is that it's so "ulu" and far...). The place is indeed beautiful, be it the exterior or interior. They have only one ballroom and it's huge! As for the poolside solemnization, it's as pretty as the pictures look (though if it's held during the day, I would most probably melt). A place worth considering...

Pat says:

Pictures of Capella's poolside solemnization area was beautiful! A unique concept where you can even "walk" on the water! When we first walk into Capella, I was shocked to see how far it was, yet scared to see how majestic it portrayed. It appears that I have been transported to another place. There is a huge poach (walking to the hotel front door is already quite tiring, advise to take other forms of transport), and the hotel is a huge Colonial styled white building. Super Atas feeling, with just the first glance of it, I can understand why it is considered as a six star hotel. Service was good, because we came super impromptu and the service crew was nice enough to entertain us! Thumbs up!

We first visited the ballroom, which is round in nature. I find it quite interesting, but I never really like enclosed ballroom area. Next, we were brought to the poolside area. They have 3 pools which can be used for parties or solemnization. Perhaps it was decorated so it doesn't seem as fantastic as the pictures. But I would consider Capella for a pool side solemnization/party.

Key says:

The outdoor solemnization is indeed beautiful, especially during sunset. However in the event of wet weather, the backup indoor venue is pretty disappointing. Similarly, the ballroom, though it is described as fan-shaped, it is actually pretty much rectangular and not really what we are looking for. The open ballroom is better in comparison and would have a nicer view during the day time. One concern by Pat is that if we are to hold it during the evening, by nightfall, there are no much view to be seen and as such, the open ballroom is not as ideal as what we want it to be. However Shangri La is still one of our consideration at this point in time.

Pat says:

I thought that Shangri La was an atas place and pricing wise would be quite steep. But I realized I was ignorant and the pricing is actually quite affordable. Another thing I would like to point out is that the outdoor beach side solemnization is awesome! With a simple yet perfect big tree and a sunset as a back drop, the big picture would look very pretty and you can't find it anywhere else in Singapore. On another hand, close up view of the bride and the groom when being solemnized might not be as nice, but I would assume to be still very pretty indeed. Sadly, they only sell the solemnization place if you also book a banquet with them. They offer a normal super huge ballroom and a smaller but still able to fit a comfortable 30 tables ballroom with a view of the beach and their swimming pool. The view I would say is fantastic in the afternoon with the sunlight and all, but at night it could be quite dark. Sadly, we are unable to do a lunch banquet plus an evening solemnization.

La Villa

The outdoor patio is the perfect location that we are looking for. Besides, there's a nice tree which can be decorated with fairy lights to be used as a solemnization venue. The interior decor of the restuarant is simple and homely. All in all this is the ideal location but due to some reason, if we were to use La Villa, we would need to hold the wedding by June 2013! Also we were adviced that the patio cannot be used for tentage as well which is a bit disappointing... A tough decision that we have not come to any conclusion as it is really the venue that fits how we want our wedding to be...

Key says:

There's a wedding show at Peach Garden, Hotel Miramar on 26 May 2012. The food is really good, the banquet ballroom is customisable, there's a list of door gifts available for choosing and some of the decoration is good. However, both the hotel interior and exterior is not nice enough and so this is definitely not on our list.

Pat says:

My friend introduced me to Peach Garden's food, he claims that it is very nice. Therefore when we saw in TODAY's newspaper that there was a wedding show on Peach Garden at Hotel Miramar, I was delighted and signed up for both of us. A restaurant wedding wasn't part of our "ideal" wedding plan, but nevertheless we were open for options.

The program of the day was live band, consultation with the sales staff, buffet lunch, bridal fashion show, a talk on Chinese wedding traditions and a talk on personal investments.

I personally enjoyed the live band and the buffet lunch. As per what my friend had said, the food was very nice indeed. I would have considered Peach Garden, if not for the fact that places that could fit 250 pax were distasteful in infrastructure and design or places that were more ideal could not fit a big guest list. A pity indeed. But I would certainty go back for the food.

Key says:

These are some possible less common areas where we initially thought of holding our wedding. Commonality for these 3 places are (i) excellent sky view, (ii) less traditional venue and (iii) informal and chill put ambience.

However, the price of reserving these places for a private event isn't cheap and hence we have given up the idea of holding at these venues.

The Jewel Box held a wedding fair. There are four places available : Diamond Place Ballroom, Black Opal, Empress Jade, Sapphire.

Pat says:

1. Diamond Place Ballroom:
• Bad points: Central four pillars blocking stage views from the back and the sides, decorations are abit plain
• Good points: Able to cater 250 people, window view of the Singapore cable car ride
2. Black Opal:
• Bad points: small, able to cater approx. 80 pax
• Good points: bar, cozy and awesome decorations and view of Sentosa, cable car ride and plantations
3. Empress Jade:
• Bad points: small, able to cater appox. 60 pax. able to see buildings and constructions sites
• Good points: oriental style, good for traditional weddings and view of Sentosa and plantations
4. Sapphire:
• Bad points: quite big but limited space area for round tables, the design of Sapphire has many structures that limits space. (open-air hence heavy rain might pour into the space)
• Good points: bar in the centre, open-air concept, very relaxed feel, good for chilling

Overall: I would prefer Black Opal for intimate wedding affairs. But since our targeted guest list is around 250-300 pax, consider Empress Jade (for relative) and Sapphire (for friends). Two different themes to cater for two different groups. Sad to say, it might again still be too small. Transportation wise might be a problem as we might need to cater for buses or cable car rides for those without cars.

The ambience of Saphhire is somewhat we are looking for but sitting space is limited. There is a possibility to combine Saphhire with Empress Jade but we would need to move up and down during the dinner which is not practical. Also, in the event of during wet weather, rain would pour into Saphhire making it a less ideal venue. The emcee for the event is indeed very good and if it's within the means of our financial capabilities, there might be a possibility to engage her. Overall Jewel Box would be ideal if our invitation list is less than 80.

Pat says: planning is key

In Singapore, it's difficult to go thru the normal process of a relationship. Many a times, a couple would actually get a house before the guy proposes to the girl. Why? Because houses are in demand and they take super long to build!

That being said, was the situation that happened to us. We were lucky to be able to get a house in our first attempt!

So while the house is being build and all, preparations of our wedding need to be done. I wanted a wedding out of the normal ordinary. It doesn't have to be very expensive, just must include the personal touch. Walls have never been a fan of mine, so a place without walls or seemingly without walls (windows etc) would suffice.

Looking through photos in pinterest, I figured I prefer the English wedding then anything else. The liveliness, fun and playfulness of the wedding enticed me.

In order to have an awesome wedding, planning ahead is the key.
